Today marks the successful closing of the Fourth Street Preserve, a 30-acre parcel that represents the last forest within Lewes city limits. This land is now permanently protected for future generations thanks to a collaborative public-private effort.

Attorney Robert Gibbs of Morris James, serving as counsel for The Greater Lewes Foundation, has been instrumental throughout this process, from the earliest negotiations through today's closing. The closing also finalized the conservation easement to the State of Delaware and the Department of Agriculture Forestry Division, ensuring this land will never be developed.

A Unique Vision for Lewes

Rob Gibbs shared that this is not a "conventional park" project; instead, it will create a living preserve. The Fourth Street Preserve will remain a natural landscape, with unpaved walking trails, pollinator habitats, constructed wetlands, and wildlife islands designed to nurture biodiversity and community education.

"This is about preserving something that can't be recreated," Gibbs explained. The GLF has been instrumental in protecting open space and ensuring a diverse and indigenous forest. The City of Lewes and the State Forestry Division created a place that will grow and change naturally over time.”

A True Community Effort

The Greater Lewes Foundation led the effort, with vital support from residents, conservation groups, and the City of Lewes. The plan includes:
    • Woodland and habitat conservation
    • Educational kiosks and benches for community engagement
    • A restoration fund to remove invasive species and sustain native plantings

Rob Gibbs was integrally involved in the project, working alongside fellow GLF Board members and the City of Lewes to align legal, financial, and community stakeholders toward this shared goal. Morris James is proud to have supported this landmark achievement. Our involvement reflects our deep commitment to Delaware's communities and environment, helping ensure the Fourth Street Preserve will remain a treasured resource for generations.
