Morris James is conducting a nationwide investigation into claims that ultra-processed foods contribute to serious health issues, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes, particularly among individuals under the age of 30.

This investigation follows the recent filing of a federal complaint alleging that major food manufacturers were aware of, yet failed to disclose, significant health risks associated with the high consumption of ultra-processed foods, despite growing scientific evidence linking these products to chronic illness. The complaint further claims that intentional aggressive marketing strategies targeted vulnerable populations, including children and young adults, while obscuring nutritional realities.

Ultra-processed foods are widely consumed in the United States and are often marketed as convenient, affordable, or even “better-for-you” options. In reality, these foods are intentionally engineered to be intensely flavored and highly appealing, containing high levels of added sugars, artificial ingredients, and chemical additives that can be addictive and harmful. Plaintiffs in the case allege that long-term consumption has caused or contributed to metabolic diseases with life-altering impacts.

“Far too many families are facing serious health conditions after years of relying on foods they were led to believe were safe and healthy,” said Keith Donovan, Managing Partner of Morris James and lead trial attorney for this investigation. “We’re committed to uncovering the truth and holding companies accountable for the harm caused.”

Morris James is actively reviewing claims from individuals or their children who have been diagnosed with NAFLD or type 2 diabetes and who regularly consumed ultra-processed foods. Our attorneys are available to discuss your potential claim in a free, confidential consultation.
