Paralegal:  Family Law

Morris James LLP, a Delaware law firm with 66 attorneys, seeks an experienced paralegal to join its Family Law practice group at the Wilmington office located at 500 Delaware Ave.  The ideal candidate will work closely with the attorneys and should have a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Family Law Paralegal. There is much client contact and drafting of legal documents in this full-time, non-exempt position.


*Assist attorneys with all aspects of family law matters from the initial client contact to completion of case.

*Meet with clients and manage all client files with discretion and confidentiality.

*Respond to client phone calls and emails in the absence of attorneys.

*Prepare and draft appropriate legal documents (Court forms & pleadings, declarations, stipulations, marital settlement agreements, financial affidavits, child support worksheets, etc.) with attorney oversight.

*Track deadlines for financial reports and pleadings.

*Draft and track Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs).

*Research case law using Westlaw.

*Assist with preparation of correspondence to clients, opposing counsel, and the Court.

*Manage service of process.

*Organize and process all discovery.

*Prepare exhibits for mediations and hearings.

*Assist attorneys in preparation of case for trial.

*Record and enter accurate time records.

*Ability to use discretion and maintain confidential information.

*Ability to exercise initiative and good judgement to work independently as appropriate and as a member of a team.

*Strong analytic and problem-solving skills.

*Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a diverse group of clients & professionals to provide information with tact and diplomacy.

*Strong verbal and written communication skills.

*Detail oriented.

*Ability to interpret and present data produced by research.

*Ability to organize and prioritize numerous projects/tasks simultaneously and complete them to meet deadlines.

*Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

*Ability to deal with/manage the emotions of others involved in this type of law.


*Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a family law paralegal.

*Must be computer literate with strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

*Experience with File Site, a document management system, is helpful.

*Degree (2 or 4 Year) from an accredited college or university.

*Ideally possess an ABA approved paralegal certificate. Equivalent family law paralegal experience may substitute for paralegal certification.

*Must be willing to travel occasionally for court hearings, depositions & trials. 

*May be required to retrieve and distribute files, written documents, or office supplies weighing up to 15 pounds.
