Morris James Leads in Delaware Today “Top Lawyers” Issue with 28 Attorney Recognitions

Morris James LLP is pleased to announce it received 28 recognitions in Delaware Today magazine’s 2017 Delaware Top Lawyers issue.  The recognized lawyers were chosen by their peers in a survey to members of the Delaware State Bar Association. 

Gretchen S. Knight, Lewis C. Ledyard III, Rich Galperin, Ian D. McCauley and James H. McMackin III, distinguished in bold, received the most votes of any lawyer in their respective categories. Morris James attorneys were rated as “Top Lawyers” in 12 separate practice areas, and Keith Donovan was recognized in multiple categories.  More ›

Partner Patricia A. Winston Appointed to Jurisdiction Improvement Committee Tasked with Improving the Efficient Resolution of Citizens’ Disputes

As a member of the Jurisdictional Improvement Committee, Morris James Partner Patricia A. Winston will serve on a team tasked with taking a comprehensive look at reforming and updating the jurisdictional authority of each of Delaware's courts.  Recently formed by the Delaware Judiciary, the Jurisdictional Improvement Committee was created in response to the Joint Study of the Delaware Courts by the Delaware Chapter of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) and the Delaware State Bar Association (DSBA). The Committee’s mission is to help the Delaware Courts operate more productively and efficiently by eliminating unnecessary overlap in the trial courts’ jurisdiction and by assigning certain types of cases to the trial court best positioned to address those cases cost-effectively and expertly.  More ›

Albert H. Manwaring Presents at Transaction Advisors M&A Spring Conference

Manwaring, IV, presented at the Transaction Advisors San Francisco M&A Spring Conference on May 12, 2016.  His presentation focused on the developments in strike suits; the rise of appraisal litigation; a review of current case law that is impacting M&A structuring; the nature of multiple jurisdiction lawsuits; global antitrust and competition reviews; and understanding tender offers’ impact on M&A deal litigation. Three Morris James Attorneys on Panels at DSBA Women and the Law Section Retreat

Joseph R. Slights, III and Ian D. McCauley spoke on panels at the Delaware State Bar Association Women and the Law Section's Retreat, which was held on March 4th and 5th, 2016.

Ian D. McCauley spoke on the first panel of the retreat that dealt with various technology issues impacting lawyers.  This panel discussed various issues including the ethical considerations of social media, the discovery of electronic material, and the use of technology in the courtroom.  

Joseph R. Slights, III spoke on a panel which tackled common issues that a practitioner confronts, such as building a network to benefit or advance one’s career, and understanding how to manage clients effectively.  This panel also provided insight into practical office management.

Patricia A. Winston Successfully Represent Radio One before Delaware Supreme Court

Patricia A. Winston secured an order from the Delaware Supreme Court affirming the Superior Court Complex Commercial Litigation Division’s grant of summary judgment in favor of their client, Radio One, Inc.  Patricia successfully represented Radio One before the Supreme Court, which upheld the Superior Court’s interpretation of a “complicated” agreement between Radio One and another broadcaster.  By its appeal, the appellant sought to reverse the Superior Court’s summary judgment decision and to overturn an earlier jury verdict in Radio One’s favor.  The ruling by the Supreme Court further confirms the appropriateness of resolving complex contract interpretation issues through summary judgment.

Morris James Partner Joseph R. Slights, III Nominated to Become Next Vice Chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery

Morris James LLP is pleased to announce that partner Joseph R. Slights, III has been nominated by Governor Jack Markell to become a Vice Chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery. The judicial nomination was announced on Monday, February 8th.

“I am honored and grateful to have been nominated by Governor Markell to serve on the nation’s premier court for the resolution of business disputes – the Delaware Court of Chancery,” Slights stated. “If I am fortunate enough to be confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to serving the citizens and the State of Delaware as Vice Chancellor.” More ›

Ian D. McCauley Appointed to Delaware Supreme Court Commission on Law & Technology

Ian D. McCauley was appointed as an Associate Member of the Delaware Supreme Court Commission on Law & Technology. The Commission was created to develop and publish guidelines and best practices regarding the use of technology and the practice of law. According to former Supreme Court Justice Henry duPont Ridgely, Liaison Justice to the new Arm of Court, “The Court expects the Commission to become a valuable resource not only to all Delaware judges and lawyers for issues related to technology and ethics in the practice of law, but also to serve as a model for other states who are interested in assisting their judges and lawyers maintain their professional competence in technology.” Click here to see the full members list and read more about the Commission.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Delaware has recognized Morris James as its “Corporate Partner of the Year.”  Managing partner, David H. Williams, accepted this award given in recognition for the firm’s service to the community and support for NAMI Delaware’s mission. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a nonprofit group that raises money and awareness for the treatment of people with mental illness.  Over the past 13 years, a dedicated team of Morris James employees has raised money each year in the NAMI Delaware Walk. Patricia A. Winston Obtain Jury Verdict for Radio One, Inc.

After a five-day jury trial in the Complex Commercial Litigation Division of the Delaware Superior Court, Patricia A. Winston obtained a verdict in favor of Radio One, Inc. in its dispute with another broadcaster, which sought $15 million in damages for an alleged breach of an Asset Exchange Agreement.  The jury deliberated for approximately 5 ½ hours before returning a verdict that Radio One was not in breach.  This case is one of only a handful of business disputes that have been tried before juries in Delaware’s business courts.
